Set during the French and Indian War in the mid-18th century, the novel follows the journey of Hawkeye, a rugged frontiersman, and his Native American companions, Chingachgook and Uncas, the last members of the Mohican tribe. As they guide a group of British sisters through dangerous wilderness, they encounter treachery, heroism, and intense battles. The novel explores themes of cultural conflict, survival, and loyalty, while offering a vivid depiction of the North American frontier during a time of war and colonial expansion.
